Our Crops

Showcasing saskatchewan raw goods

Longmire Farms is a family focused grain farm located near Kindersley in West Central Saskatchewan. We plant around 8,500 acres each year to a mix of grains, pulses and oilseeds. Wheat, barley, durum, red and green lentils, yellow peas, canola, and flax usually make an appearance every year somewhere. We like to keep our rotations broad and manage weeds with the best tools available. Trials, new tech, and good conversations with on and off farm specialist help keep things forward focused.

Hard Red Spring Wheat

Introduced in the mid-nineteenth century, hard red spring wheat, or HRSW, is what people imagine when they think of the Canadian Prairies. Nearly two centuries of breeding, and an increase from 500,000 acres to nearly 25 million, have resulted in high yielding, disease resistant varieties that are a staple crop in most rotations.

Malt Barley

Showcasing Saskatchewan Raw Goods

A crop that marks the end of the hunter-gatherer era of civilization. The Egyptians loved it, the University of Saskatchewan helped create the modern 2-row varieties…the story of malt barley continues across the prairie provinces.

Red Lentils

Showcasing Saskatchewan Raw Goods

Saskatchewan is the largest exporter of red lentils in the world, with destination markets being primarily India and North Africa, with Turkey as a middleman. They make their own nitrogen and are an excellent source of protein.

YEllow PEas

A legume, like lentils, yellow peas are one of the most coveted vegetarian sources of protein around.

Flax

Another crop with a long history, its oil is high in Omega oils, and the tough straw can be used for various textiles, road building materials, and its bright purple flower stands out like no other crop.

Canola

A modern oilseed, related closely to rapeseed, canola now runs most deep fryers, serves as a biofuel, and can be cold pressed to provide a natural, nutty oil that shines when used in baking.
